Comparison Essay
What is Comparison Essay
A comparison essay, as the name implies, is a type of essay which is used to compare two different subjects. Comparison, however, includes the similarities and/or the differences between the two topics chosen. The basic aim of a comparison essay is to define two different topics of discussion and then either compare or contrast the factors which are common and unique to each of them.
The key to writing a comparison essay is that the two subjects chosen should not be completely unrelated to each other. Subjects should be such that there should be some similarities between them so as to provide a sound context for the essay. For example, it would be wise to compare between two different movies or books, but it would be absolutely absurd to try and compare travelling with a book/movie.
How to write Comparison Essay
The introduction of the essay should start with defining both the subjects properly, giving readers full knowledge of what is being compared or contrasted. The body of the essay should focus on the similarities and differences that the writer has identified regarding the two topics chosen. There are two approaches in how the writer should go about writing all the similarities and differences. One way is to mention all the points and information about the first work or character in a paragraph, and then go about doing the same for the second work or character in a different paragraph. Every positive and negative point of that work or character is included in the same paragraph in a continuous format. This enables the reader of the essay to avoid gathering points about a particular item from different places of essay. The second approach of writing the body of a comparison essay is to work on individual similarity/difference at a single time. In case of a difference, the writer would state the fact of the first work or character and immediately contrast it with the corresponding point of the second work or character. This enables the reader to differentiate all the points line by line with greater understanding. A comparison essay is concluded by summarizing the key points of both the subjects and the writer may wish to give an opinion in favor of a particular subject.
An example of a topic which suits the style of comparison essay is ‘psychology and philosophy’. As both of these subjects share some important similarities between them, the writer can identify these and at the same time inform the readers of the differences that exist side by side between the two.
